Tweeting Me
Tweeting You

By Sean Beardmore

I didn’t think it would be long before I made a post about twitter !

twitter image

What with all of the Twitter cleansing that is going on at the moment, I thought I would let you know why and how I use twitter, and just let you know what I REALLY think about twitter, plus let you know what tools I use, and one gem that I have found recently.

Believe it or not, I  joined twitter some 10 months ago, and in those 10 months I have seen MANY changes.

OK, I am not an expert by any means, but Twitter does get addictive, and it is a great tool which ever way you look at it.

Before I start though, I thought I would have a little rant, and see if you agree with me, or you tell me that I am ranting about nothing!

About 10 months or so ago, I found that I could have a little chat with fellow twitter followers, pick up some of their offers and pick up some good advice and RT (retweet) valuable information.

You still can and I still do, but it is hard depending how many people you follow and those that follow you……. but what is really begining to bug me, is the constant spam received in direct messages, in tweets, and when they mention your user name along with three others accompanied with a spam link.  Mind you, I haven’t had any blue pill tweets yet, have they not caught on yet :)

I hate it if someone can’t be bothered to put a picture of themselves on their profile, use their first name or combination of. Instead they use some made up crap, like cashmillions etc, etc.   A little while ago, I couldn’t believe the amount of beautiful, gorgeous women who were begininng to follow me. I thought my luck had changed.

I mean these women were stunning….then I looked a bit deeper and noticed this was just a disguise for someones account who would end up spamming me with constant teeth whitening links, web cam links (you know the ones), and constant clickbank links.

OK, I don’t blame them for their intiative, but with twitter, I thought they would ban these people, but they constantly get through.

I could go on, but RANT OVER for now.

So what do I use twitter for? Well for one, it’s a quick easy way to keep in touch with people you want to keep in touch with, but also being able to see what fellow twitters are promoting or saying.

I like motivational qoutes, so I have started tweeting a few that mean something to me, but also may mean something to someone else, I also tweet my Free Report and anything else I have that is FREE. Why not? I already have a few people join my list by doing this.

I have also noticed my Traffic form Twitter increase, which is also great, so it does have it’s uses!

My latest is also tweeting JV Giveaways so that I can attract contributors to help with my listing…..just been honest here.

Now I don’t want you to think that I am there all day tweeting these messages. I used to, but then I found this really cool FREE tool where I can set up my tweets daily, weekly, monthly, and in any timezone.

This tool is currently a Beta version, but works really well so I urge you to check out http://www.twaitter.com (no affiliate link because its Free) and let me know what you think? I also use  http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta which a great way to see all your Direct Messages, Mentions and live feed, plus you can link your facebook page if you really want to!

Finally, you probably already know about Twitter Karma but if you don’t, I find this really useful FREE tool to do a bulk unfollow of people I have followed who follow you back then unfollow you right away (sorry if I lost you on that one)….why they do it I don’t know , may be to make their follower ratio look good.

I use this to check the people I follow, and check for the last time they tweeted, soem of them have never tweeted, so whats the point in following them, check if they have a profile picture, and the obvious group of Glamour models who follow me ;-)

One quick one, is I also use tweetadder to add followers to my profile. I did pay for this, there is an affiliate programme, but again I have purposely left a link out for you to search and check out for yourself.

All in all, Twitter is great for communicating your thoughts, inviting people to download your free report/ebook and build your list, and have quick chats with fellow twitterers!

Now it’s over to you, how do you use twitter and why?

Leave your comments, be intersted to know!

Take care

Sean

Hey Sean,

I have recently unfollowed everyone on my account due to the spam I was receiving! I haven’t really been using it to its full extent due to this, so I thought I would get rid of the lot :-)

Not sure if it was the right move or not, but at least I now only get tweets from the people I want to follow!

I can now start using this tool as it was intended…to communicate and build relationships.

I lost about 10k followers in the process of this, but most of them are probably using automated tools to unfollow me, so who cares really…

I only did this yesterday, so now getting back into the swing of using it again :-)

I will check out the software, and you never know, I may start building my followers again soon!

Great post!

Paul

Didn’t you have 40k or something like that Paul? That figures scares me a little :) Hard to build relationships like you say on Twitter with that amount as you say, but no harm using twaitter for the giveaway links etc.

Hey Sean,

You got that rant out then, I did say I thought you should and I’m sure you could have gone on a bit longer with it.

I keep thinking of things I could have put in my post, I’m finding more and more people promoting links and then having my and others Twitter names after it. It never bothered me before but it’s getting right on my wick at the moment.

As well as quote I started sending jokes that got a good response(well it made me laugh finding them anyway)

I have heard of Twitter Karma but not checked it out yet I will get on to that sounds good.

Take it easy and keep in touch,

James

Hi Sean

I’m intruged by Twitter but despite reading the odd post about it I still dont think i get it. The problem with it in my opinion is that its too easy to follow and unfollow so you eventaully get so many people posting sh** no one reads – i think david cameron summed it up well when he said ‘too many twits make a twat’

I get the odd follow/optin from it but thats about it.

I’ve got 6000 odd followers but i reckon half are false accounts as you say….

True Peter, I find Twiter Karma come sin handy to sorting everythng out, but I am begining to get the opt ins from it now.
Love the David Cameron qoute :)

Hey Sean,

Thought I would stop by your blog to say hi.

Interesting post about Twitter.

I only joined a few weeks ago and like everyone else I get heavily spammed (I’ve even had a couple of mafia invites… what on earth is that all about?).

On saying that I’ve also met some really interesting people.

I use Tweetdeck to keep track of my favorites – in other words, people who actually communicate. I enjoy jokes, quotes, links to interesting articles and generally chatting.

I don’t mind the odd affiliate link being thrown in, but if that’s ALL they offer – they’re soon GONE!

On the whole I’m happy to use Twitter as it’s intended, to meet people, communicate and build relationships.

Talk again soon

Collette

Hi Collette,

Thanks for dropping by :)

Yes, it is an Interesting one for sure, I like to keep in touch with a the people I want to build a relationship with, but as for the mafia, I may steer clear :-)

Be in touch!

Hey Sean,

Agree with you rant and most of what you’re saying here.

I’m tweeting my giveaways links, but not too often and also making sure that I tweet genuine tweets fairly regularly.

After all, Twitter is supposed to follow the single premise of
“what are you doing”.

Talk soon buddy,

Andrew.

Hi Sean,

Twitter has gone crazy andd I to am bombarded with Spam and Porn.

I think the answer is to have multiple accounts.

Have you checked out Gil’s Corner? He’s a fellow student and is trialing some free software to automatically clone users with bulk following or search for keywords.

You could create accounts for specific niches and a have a personal Twitter account.

Interesting debate though.

@Andrew Hey Andrew, hope your well! Yeh it does have it’s uses, but may also look at multiple accounts as John has syggested :)

@John Hey John, Yep, trying out Gil’s software, just need some tuition really on it, so look forward to Gil’s call next week.

14

Hi Sean,

I’m in agreement with you as well. It really gets on my ti….sorry, nerves when someone retweets my tweet but changes the link to theirs. Can anything be more irritating. Just do the work yourself ya lazy..

But I do pretty much the same thing as you. Watched Alex’s tweetingwithyou vids and went from there.

I mainly use two sites – socialoomph.com (previously tweetlater) and buzzom.com. Buzzom has some cool Twitin stats graphics that shows your influence.

Overall I enjoy twitter but find that there isn’t nearly as much interaction as I would have expected. It’s nearly all sales messages.

Andy

15

Hi Andy,

Intersting points and I will check out buzzom for sure, I like the interaction with fellow students on twitter, best :)

Take care

Sean

16

Hey Sean,

I like that you brought up all of these points and your rant! I feel your pain, man.

I’ve used Twitter Karma for quite some time when I add followers or if I need to get rid of spammers.

Another great free tool that I’ve begun using is TwitterTise. That site allows you to schedule out your tweets and also tracks your links so you know how many people are responding and from what part of the world. It’s a good way to see how effective your style of tweets are and what you could change.

Now, it’s time to clear out all of those spammers, aka, the attractive women. =P

Take care!
Joe

17

Hey Sean,

I completely agree with your Twitter rant. In fact, i have hardly used Twitter recently because i hate all of the SPAM going on there.

It’s getting SO bad now, Twitter is being completely ruined by people just looking to make a quick buck and firing off loads of affiliate links to everyone they possibly can.

I should get back into using it again as it is a great resource, but i does annoy me the way it is abused.

Thanks for the tip about Twaitter, i’m going to check that out now.

Cheers Sean, speak soon,
Paul

18

@Joe, how are you Joe? So it wasn’t only me who has the same opinion :-) Sahme to get rid of those nie photos! Will take a look at Twittertise, seem to be quite a few on the market now, and free. Going to trial Gil’s new software too.

@Paul, Despite the spam, I still use it to post links to my free reports and JV Giveaways and does produce a few results, but that is only tweeting them once a day and not every 5 minutes, so may step it up a bit

Cheers

Sean

19

Hey Sean,

About the rant, it all sounds very familiar, I don’t even read my DM’s anymore because it’s just spam hell in there!

I think people are begining to cotton on that people don’t read their DM’s, because I’m also receiving a lot of @replies with those affiliate links. The worse thing about those @replies is, you can’t just unfollow them because you’re not following them in the first place. Does blocking them work, or does that just make them not able to follow you?

Thanks for sharing those tools with us, I’ve not used those yet apart from Tweetdeck. So I’ll have to have a look at them.

I think I’ll have to do a post about Twitter myself, it should help to get me some traffic from Twitter when I tweet it. :)

I enjoyed reading this, especially your rant! :D

Paul.

20

Hey Paul, how are you?

It was a bit of a mild rant compared to what I was going to say ;-) I have blocked quite a few of the spammers, but they keep coming! Shame really, cause twitter can be a really effective marketing tool for those that respect it for what it is.

Talk soon.

Sean

21

Thanks to everyone who’s shared the twitter resources here.

I’ve only started on twitter a couple of days ago so not too much spam (so far) but reading the rant has certainly given me a good heads up as to what I can also expect in the near future!

I’m using HootSuite (which has a tweet later facility but does not sound as fully featured as Twaitter) and gotta say that without the ability to separate people/groups into different columns I can see how it could quickly become a nightmare to manage your twitter account.

If all else fails the the idea of multiple accounts sounds a good one!

Rob

p.s. @Peter also loved the Cameron joke :)

It’s a wonder what to choose these days for titter tools, but a useful list here.

Sean

great to hear your thoughts, I haven’t really used/exploited Twitter as yet as I started on there and got overwhelmed with the amount of direct sales messages and affiliate links that were swamping it.
I have used Tweetdeck to set up an Alex Jeffreys group of people to follow which has enabled me to keep tabs on the people that I actually want to communicate with.

Its interesting to see a number of marketers pulling back, recently both Alex and Mike Filsaime (and Paul wilson – Paul you keep some illustrious company! lol) dumped all their followers to start again with useful networks only in a bid to avoid the spam.

Think I will be watching this space as Twitter is not high in my priorities at the moment and it seems to be a changing medium.

HI Tom, Good to hear from you again, hope all is going well.

Interesting one Twitter, many advantages, but also disadvantages with Spam, but then I look at my spam filter for email and it’s no different! Talk soon, Sean

25

Hey Sean,

Yes, aren’t those girls gorgeous!

Seriously, I couldn’t agree with you more. Twitter is completely out of control. The Direct messages are a joke. I use DM Whacker to bulk delete them now because it’ 99.9% spam. I used to read them all and met some really nice people but not anymore.

Now what I do is quickly scan them looking for porn and then I make sure I unfollow then block them.

I did go a long time doing everything manually and gained thousands of followers. This way I kept a better handle on the undesirables but it got to the point where I was spending too much time on Twitter.

So against my better judgment I started using software to gain followers. The software did pretty much what I was doing manually and it saved me tons of time so why not?

I’m not stupid, I realize that most of the people following me are only doing so because I followed them first. Most of them could really give a crap about what I have to say.

But it’s still a numbers game. The more followers I get the more nice people I meet even though it’s a really small percentage of the total.

What I do know is that I get a lot of traffic from Twitter so until I find a better way I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. I don’t use this traffic to sell anything but more for my blog and other free stuff.
